BSI Safety Standards Manual

WORK PORTFOLIO
Design + Graphics
Title: PD 5304:2005 | Guidelines on Safe Use of Machinery
Items: Front Cover, Spine, Index, 14 Sections
Size: A4+ various size
Client: British Standards (BSI)

Standards exist to make life safer and more efficient and to facilitate trade. This cover every area of life (seriously) from technical guidelines and specifications for the aerospace industry to the management of diverse issues like CCTV systems, customer loyalty, even skateparks, down to the yellow colour code of the police caution tape.

British Standards is the National Standards Body of the UK, responsible for facilitating, drafting, publishing and marketing British Standards and other guidelines. BSI also pioneered the development of the BS 5750, which has become ISO 9000 - the world's most popular management system series.

An interesting experience for me, dealing with a client who is particular about everything. A welcome change from the norm. The design was a hit-or-miss, thankfully the client is open-minded. And "very happy".

(front cover + spine)

My idea is, besides updating the design to the 21st century ...
The subtle swirly-textured blue background lends spatial depth to the 3D gears.

A bright cloud of light highlights certain parts of machinery gears. Similar to the way that orthopedics highlight parts of the spine which are trouble spots. Once the industry H+S standard is adhered to, the machinery is set to function beautifully.

Titles are in both blue and yellow combinations.

(sample insert page)

Index page + the 14 Section pages employ the use of tabs for easy thumb reference. The 3D gears from the front cover is now transfered to line drawings on these pages. For the 2-colour print runs - I chose black and blue, licked from the front cover.

Dude!
I'm actually rather impressed. Then again, I always am with your work - but this is first time you do book design yes?
