Graz 1 : Kunsthaus

One weekend recently, a friend SS and I went over to Graz last minute to check out the architecture. I have always been interested in dynamic lines, and architecture being the 3-dimensional extension of drawing. To visit a place and see the building for what it is, its creative and practical uses - It's a spatial experience but I also try to imagine what thoughts went into creating these structures.

1. Kunsthaus (Culture House)
This building has been described as looking like an alien, as it rises above the treelines alongside the Muir river. It is meant to be Graz's Tate Modern, housing various installations. This was the main attraction for me, although I was somewhat disappointed by the size. Perhaps it was the grey weather that did not reflect well on the panes.

Rooftop.

Front side of the building.

The extension called the Needle, is amazing. Even more amazing for someone who hates the heights!

A chute coming out of the side.

Rooftop chutes. Wonder if any pigeon problem here.

See what I mean about the heart and valves.

Beside the building was a painted wall, interesting criss crosses.

Bridge extension.

Nightfall. Waiting for the pulsating lights to come on the surface at 7pm. Yup, a wonderful display of lights being programmed to dazzle.

Walla, the lights!

Neon sign alternating between "Resistance is Futile" and "Resistance is Fertile", a take from Star Trek. I approve!

This is a view of the Needle from inside the building. The spirals are reflections of lights hung down from the chutes. Reminded me of mosquito coils, back in the day.
