Riding the Rainbow

This booklet was produced to commemorate the launch of the Mobile Internet Unit. What is MIU? Think of mobile libraries, this bus is comfortably equipped with computer terminals for about 20 people. A couple of teachers and technically-trained assistants go on the bus travelling up and down the country, visiting rural schools and villages too poor to have enough computers. It operates within the Smart Learning Environment (SLE) program, developed from 1997 to create life-long learning with the use of ICT.

Running on the success of the first MIU bus, a 2nd one was built. A steel grey bus with a comet-rainbow. This booklet accompanies the launch. The idea is to celebrate the adventures of the MIU, in a retro-styled journal.

I travelled with the bus on one of its journeys; photos and videos were taken of the day.

Students learn to use the internet and create web-pages. In a close-knit community, the children end up teaching their parents, uncles and grandparents how to have an online voice and keep updated with news around the world.

The graphics of fishes relate to the story of how Ho, driver-2nd coach-mr.fix-it, stayed up in the early hours to fix a computer problem. They ended up staying at a hotel run by the Fisheries Authority. All the rooms were named after fishes, he laughs hysterically.

I cannot mention enough how dedicated the team were: the teachers are actual teachers with experience, who constantly update their knowledge and skills and network with other online schools on various projects. These cyber coaches and assistants are well-trained to cope with the multi-tasks required by a demanding job. I was exhausted by the end of the weekend, and able to shut off with a drink with my mates. These superhumans are already planning for the next trip to coincide with the National Jamboree!

With successful tours under its fan belt, the MIU concept is ready to be shared throughout Malaysia and developing nations.
